AFGHANISTAN

The Soviet-Afghan War

Game Design: Perry A. Moore

THE SOVIET'S VIETNAM

The war in Afghanistan was for the Soviets what Vietnam was to the Americans. As one Russian General noted, "Afghanistan was our Vietnam except without trees." It was a battle between the Mujahideen guerilla fighters and a world power that began in December, 1979. The war lasted nine long years and ended with the Soviet juggernaut withdrawing on February 15, 1988. It left thousands of dead and created millions of refugees. Like America in Vietnam, where the Americans won every battle, in Afghanistan, the Soviets did the same only to lose the war.

Afghanistan is a grand-tactical simulation of the critical battles that occurred during the Afghan-Soviet war. Players assume the roles of the Soviet commander and Afghan rebel leaders as they struggle in the guerilla war.

The 11 x 17" map covers southern portion of Afghanistan from the Salang tunnel to the Pakistani border. The 280 counters show Soviet troops and Afghan geurrillas, as well as special weapons, and US/Pakistani forces.
